CCTV to combat vandals

Published on 30th November 2006 in News

Goole Town Council is to fund CCTV for the town's theatre and community centre.

Cars parked in The Gate/Courtyard car park have been damaged by vandals and a meeting was held to find out the cost of covering the area.

A cost of £4,000 was quoted, which would cover the installation of a camera whose images would be sent back to The Courtyard and stored for up to two weeks.

At Monday's meeting, town clerk Brian Robertson reported that The Courtyard had no capital budget for the installation but could meet the cost of internal wiring, internet connections and revenue.

No money had been allocated in the council's budget either, but Mr Robertson suggested that the £4,500 earmarked for play equipment at Percy Street be used.

"Consultation with local children shows that this sum will be inadequate to meet anything like their expectations, with a figure of around £12,500 being more realistic," Mr Robertson reported.

Councillors agreed that the money should pay for CCTV on the condition that commuted sums from new housing developments be used to provide a better play area.

It was suggested that The Courtyard should make some sort of contribution to the cameras and councillors eventually agreed on a compromise - that the council would fund the cameras in return for free use of The Courtyard.

The Courtyard will be also be asked to pay for spaces to be marked out in the car park, with the work to be done by Goole Town Council maintenance staff.
