Award winners are a credit to themselves
Local schoolchildren have been awarded for their dedication to improving the communities at the Humberside Police Lifestyle Awards.
Three groups from the Howden and Goole area were rewarded for their hard work in helping others and improving the environment.
Vision Plus, made up of pupils from Carlton Holy Famiy and Catholic School and Howden Secondary School and Technology College, organised and performed in a series of musical concerts including two Caribbean-themed evenings complete with traditional food, drinks and entertainment. Concerts were also staged at the Waterways museum in Goole, a 'Party in the Garden' as well as at local churches and scout halls. Many have benefited from the concerts including the Bustanabte Children's Hospice in Jamaica and the Hook Scout Group. Vision Plus team members Alex Binnington, William Rice and Sam Fawbert (all 13 years-old) were rewarded with an adventure holiday in Wales.
The BBFL Club, featuring Carlton Holy Family Catholic High School and Vermuyden School pupils Natalie O'Brien, Andie Appleyard, Sophie Hoggarth and Kelle Rhumann (all 11), were another local group to walk away with a prize when they too scooped an adventure holiday in Wales. The Best Friends for Life Club organised tombolas, tabletop sales and a sponsored bike ride. They also helped the environment by producing leaflets, recycling rubbish and making bird feeders. They chose to support local clubs including the dance studios, bowls club and rugby club, who used the donation to obtain rugby balls for the mini and junior sections of the club.
Finally, The Sparks, made up of Hook Primary School pupils Kara Furlong, Jessica Hedley (both 11), Megan Kirby and Emily Rice (both 10), had a busy summer holiday organising a table top sale with Guess the Teddies Names and Guess the Weight of the Cake games, as well as helping at a local cub camp, litter picking and dog walking. All the funds raised went to Jerry Green dog sanctuary. The girls each won a day trip to Alton Towers.
Paul Lyons, Lifestyle Awards supporter from Arco, said: "I have to say that I was astounded at the dedication, enthusiasm and quality of work of the finalist teams. One hears so much negativity about today's youth that I didn't expect to see such positive attitudes. Choosing the overall winner was a hard task but in my mind they are all winners."
