A controversial housing project has been given the go-ahead by planning chiefs, despite protests by neighbours.

Ashfield, an Edwardian villa on leafy Hook Road, is considered one of the most imposing private buildings in Goole.

So, when owner Michael Bennett applied for planning permission to develop the house and its grounds, some neighbours lodged objections.

Mr Bennett has since won planning permission to convert the villa into five luxury apartments and build a separate house in the grounds.

On top of this, planning chiefs gave him permission to build a single-storey studio apartment on the site, as well as a building to be used as four studio apartments.

Some of Mr Bennett's neighbours claimed the development would not be in keeping with the area and could ruin its tranquility due to rowdy residents.

Mr Bennett has stated from the outset that the flats would be at the top end of the market and would not attract young people.
