Villagers in Swinefleet have hit out at East Riding Council after a glass-recycling bank was moved without anyone notifying them.

The bank was taken away after a noise complaint from at least one Swinefleet resident.

The recycling bank was behind the village pub, the Ship Inn, but was taken away two weeks ago. It has not yet been relocated.

County councillor Caroline Fox, whose ward covers Swinefleet, said: "I think it's a bit unfair to remove it without consultation with the parish council or the village. We do, after all, make a big thing about recycling in the East Riding. And this has only come about because of one complaint."

The East Riding Council says it will now consult local residents to see where they want the recycling bank.

Cllr Fox, who will be distributing questionnaires to residents' homes along with fellow councillor Gordon Megson and prospective Goole MP Andrew Percy, added: "We do intend to put right what's gone wrong. We'll be asking people whether they want it (the bottle bank) behind the Ship Inn or in an alternative spot."

Eddie Wressle, clerk to Swinefleet Parish Council, said: "I think that it would only have been courteous to let the parish council know that a complaint had been made."

A spokeswoman for the East Riding Council said several complaints had been made about the glass recycling bank.

She added: "A glass recycling bank at Swinefleet was removed after several complaints of noise from nearby residents.

"In consultation with the parish council, officers from East Riding of Yorkshire Council have been, and are continuing to, seek a suitable location for the replacement of the bank.

"A consultation will also take place with local residents to find alternative locations. Officers are also considering a scheme to offer recycling credits to alocal voluntary group to promote the banks and adopt responsibility for their tidiness and reporting when they are full."
