Progress for school build
Construction work to transform Vermuyden School into East Riding's first state of the art school is well under way.
Phase one of the building work, on Centenary Road, has now been completed and will provide temporary accommodation for the school admin team and some teaching areas once the new school term starts in September. The new building will also host a variety of community based facilities including a crèche and a gym.
In addition, ten temporary classrooms have also been set up on the Boothferry Road side of the school to accommodate the students until building work is complete.
The demolition of existing teaching areas is due to start in September, along with work to the school's infrastructure, ready for work to begin on phase two of the project this December.
Building work carried out in phase two will include areas for teaching and school management and will improve on Vermuyden's current facilities. It will also include an ICT suite, design and technology areas, music and drama teaching facilities and a large hall to keep in line with the school's status as a mathematics and computing college. The school's main reception will also be relocated into the new building.
Teachers, pupils and visitors should also note that from September there will be new arrangements for visiting the school. Pedestrians can enter the school from Centenary Road whilst a temporary car park has been set up on Airmyn Road.
The former Goole Grammar School's £15 million make over, which aims to improve facilities for students in the area and create a new form of learning environment at the school, is expected to be completed by 2010.
