Howden Town Councillors expressed their frustration over the consequences of speeding in the town at Tuesday night's meeting, calling for more to be done.

Cllr Robin Drury spoke out about the lack of traffic-calming measures in the town and asked: "Why can we not have simple traffic-calming measures in Howden? We have previously asked for flashing speed lights but have got nowhere."

Traffic has long been a problem in the town. Recently a car crashed into a house on Flatgate, causing severe structural damage to the property.

"We need a 20 mph speed limit down Flatgate or some traffic-calming measure to prevent more damage to the houses there," Cllr Drury suggested.

Cllr Elaine Ward agreed, saying: "When it is bin day the pavement is blocked with dustbins so pedestrians, mainly schoolchildren, are forced to walk on the road. We need something to stop speeding cars.

"The only time that road is pleasant to walk along is on a weekend when it's quieter."

The discussion moved to HGVs, which travel through Howden and along Flatgate. Cllr Drury said: "30 mph is too fast for lorries to be travelling down Flatgate when there are houses so close to the road."

The councillors expressed their concerns to East Riding of Yorkshire Councillor Mark Preston, who attended the meeting and who said he would help by following up an ongoing request for a school travel plan in Howden. This aims to create a school safety zone around Howden School to reduce the risk of accidents.

The travel plan would see a zebra crossing put in place near the school, along with flashing speed lights on Flatgate.

Cllr Drury said: "Other towns have been given safety measures. It is so frustrating because as a town we are getting nothing. There is not one traffic-calming measure in Howden."

It was also noted that the town clerk had written to East Riding of Yorkshire Council about the lack of road safety measures in the town to no avail.

A spokesperson from East Riding Council commented: "As part of a Howden renaissance consultation asking residents what they want, East Riding of Yorkshire Council is looking into speed limits and traffic-calming measures, as well as other issues in the town.

"The Council will take into account comments from all road users and pedestrians when they decide on the correct measures for the area."
