Goole and Brigg MP Ian Cawsey has lent his support to one of the town's most popular pubs which is battling to stay open after being flooded.

The F'st 'n' Last Pub on South Street was hit by last week's floods, making it the third time the establishment has flooded in the last year.

Landlords Brian Knight and Jane Tate have since contacted Yorkshire Water who have so far failed to give the couple any remedy or information as to what is causing the flooding.

Mr Knight said: "We are still pretty much in the dark as to why we keep getting flooded. We are convinced there is a breach in the drain at the side of the pub meaning when it does rain heavy the drains are not able to cope with the water levels."

After hearing about the pub's plight Ian Cawsey contacted Mr Knight to offer his services and help the landlord get the answers he needs from Yorkshire Water.

Mr Cawsey said: "It is clear that there is a significant problem with the drains in South Street which is leading to large floods in the cellars of the First and Last public house. This is the third time there has been a big flood in the last year and this is not weather related as the flood a couple of weeks ago was the day before the rain that led to floods elsewhere in the town. I have spoken to Yorkshire Water to stress the importance of finding a solution.

"Whilst it has been a very difficult time for Brian he has kept the doors open so his regulars can be served and there is a warm welcome for anyone else who fancies popping in. I hope that the cause of this flooding is soon solved and then rectified."

The mystery of the floods is hampering trade at the First and Last pub which is having to open shorter hours but the landlords are doing all they can to limit the inconvenience to customers .

"We are disinfecting the pub daily as there is a musty smell which we need to try and get rid of.

"It is affecting trade, as we usually serve meals, but its difficult to do so at the moment. It is bad publicity for us when there is a bad smell," said Mr Knight.

A spokesman for Yorkshire Water confirmed to the Goole Times that the company was working to establish the source of the flooding: "Yorkshire Water is aware of flooding at The First and Last pub on South Street in Goole and can confirm that the company are currently investigating the issue further, having taken samples from the site last week to determine where the water influx may have come from. The results of these tests will be confirmed shortly and will enable us to progress with the appropriate course of action to resolve the situation," they said.

But for now it is business as usual at the First and Last as Mr Knight vows to battle on under difficult circumstances: "We are determined to stay open as much as we can so our customers do not lose out in any way," he said.
