Country Notes by Rosemary Roach
Well, the weather has had to spoil itself, and we have had a fair share of rainy days and thunderstorms. The harvest will have been put on hold, with some farmers not being able to get onto their land because it is so waterlogged. Not as bad as last year's flooding, but it is not far behind.
I am writing this on another rainy day, with the lawn all awash and the drive peeping through the puddles. I have a thick cardigan on and am wondering about turning the heating on.
The weather has suddenly changed from summer to autumn, and instead of a salad tea I think I will put a pan of vegetables on for soup.
The host of butterflies that have recently been nectaring on the flowers in my garden have not ventured out today. They will be deep in the shelter of the shrubbery, keeping dry.
The birds, too, are reluctant to fly; the house martins and swallows are having a job trawling for food because the insects will not be on the wing, either. So they will go hungry today.
I think the only birds happy in the rain will be the ducks and waterfowl, and perhaps the blackbirds tugging worms out of the lawn - that is if they can find a patch that isn't under water.
Let's hope that the weather reverts back to summer tomorrow, and we are not into a premature autumn.
