Goole Town Councillor Mike Harrison will soon be jetting off to American shores to take part in one of the country's biggest political campaigns.

Cllr Harrison, who also works for Sheffield MP Meg Munn, applied to go to America to help with their election. He recently found out his application was successful and that he would be working as part of the Labour party contingent to help with Barack Obama's election campaign

Of the experience Cllr Harrison said: "I received an email a few months back with details of a trip which was being organised to help with a political campaign in America but it didn't say which one.

"I put my name forward then I received a call recently saying it would be helping with Barack Obama's election campaign and asking if I was still interested.

"I thought it would be a fantastic experience to be right in the heart of the campaign, so I have now booked my flights out to America."

He will fly out on October 30 to work at the election campaigns headquarters in Ohio for the last four days of campaigning.

Although details of the work Cllr Harrison will be required to carry out are yet to be confirmed, he is looking forward to working in the States. "I am very excited as it is a once in a lifetime opportunity. It will be great to see how a big American campaign works," he said.

"I will be supporting Barack Obama's Democratic campaign. If he wins he will be bringing in some important changes. He will also be the first black American president in history, so I hope to be there and be part of it when history is made."

Barack Obama is set to go head to head with Republican John McCain on November 4 to determine America's next president.
