MBE bids hospital a fond farewell
A familiar face in local health care retired this week after 36 years of working for the NHS in Goole.
Susan Glass, MBE, administration manager, said a sad and fond farewell to her colleagues at Goole and District Hospital with a celebratory get together at the hospital yesterday.
Susan was born and educated in Goole and began her career with Goole Stevedores Shipping Company, where she worked as a comptometer operator, calculating wages. Then in 1972 she became a receptionist at the former Bartholomew Hospital, where she managed the switchboard for the three hospitals at the time - Bartholomew, St John's and Westfield hospitals.
She said: "The reception was the hub of activity for patients, visitors and staff."
Susan then moved to St John's Hospital in a higher clerical officer role before moving to the brand new Goole and District Hospital when it opened its doors in 1988. She took up her new role as administrative assistant just weeks before her 40th birthday.
She was promoted in 1992, which is when she became Administration Manager. She has worked there ever since, providing an invaluable administrative role, which has seen her work with patients, members of the public, staff, charitable organisations and other local agencies in the community.
Now, just weeks after celebrating the hospital's 20th anniversary and the NHS's 60th birthday, Susan is saying farewell as she notches up her own 60th year.
Her services to the NHS were recognised in January 2003 when she was awarded an MBE in the Queen's New Year Honours List.
Susan said: "I feel very proud to have worked for the NHS in Goole over the last 36 years, as it is has been a wonderful experience. I have met some wonderful people, both patients and members of the public. I have been privileged to work with some lovely people at the hospital over the years and I will be sorry to say goodbye."
Goole and District Hospital site manager Dorothy Hulme added: "It has been a real pleasure working with Susan over the years. Her hard work and dedication has really been appreciated and I know she will be sadly missed by all of her colleagues."
