Wading birds may travel thousands of miles each year - but they always return to RSPB Blacktoft Sands near Goole to refuel.

Staff at the nature reserve have organised a special guided wader walk so visitors can discover the amazing and rare birds and be able to spot the difference between a greenshank and green sandpiper.

The walk will be led by RSPB staff and will take place on Saturday, August 16 from 9am until 11am.

As the breeding season draws close, several of the reserves lagoons are being visited by migrating wading birds on their twice-yearly long-haul flights.

The reserve is visited by many different species as they journey back to their wintering grounds, which can be as far away as Africa and Asia.

The birds can fly for many miles without stopping, but along the way they get tired and hungry and so come to land at very important wetland habitats such as the reedbed lagoons at RSPB Blacktoft Sands.

At the reserve each bird stays for a few days, eating as much food as they can before continuing with its journey.

Tori Summerell, visitor officer, said: "Late summer is an exciting time of year. With so many birds in migration mode, we never know what will show up each day.

"Food stop-off sites such as RSPB Blacktoft Sands are vital for the survival of wading birds as they travel to their winter grounds and many different birds come to the site. It is the perfect time of year for visitors to get excellent close-up views of the waders and pick up helpful tips on how to tell the differences between the species."

To find out more about the wader walk and to book a place contact staff on 01405 704665 or email blacktoft.sands@ rspb.org.uk. To avoid disappointment it is essential to book the walks in advance.

RSPB Blacktoft Sands nature reserve is off the minor road through Reedness and Ousefleet. Follow the brown tourist signs from Goole.
