Goole has been chosen as the latest town to join the Renaissance Towns and Cities programme run by regional development agency Yorkshire Forward.

Sarah Pearson, head of the Humber division for Yorkshire Forward, officially announced the town's inclusion in the programme at the recent Goole 2028 conference.

The conference brought together local business owners, residents and council officials to look at development prospects for Goole over the next 20 years.

As part of the Renaissance programme the town will be prioritised by Yorkshire Forward for investment over the next 15 to 20 years.

According to a presentation given by Ms Pearson at Goole 2028, as much as £26 million could be invested in the town's port and more than £2 million could be spent on the regeneration of the market complex.

The scheme also means that the Yorkshire Forward, which is funded by the central government, will commit to long-term strategic development frameworks to deliver first-class places to live, work and visit in Goole.

Speaking at the meeting Ms Pearson said: "We need to improve Goole's reputation, bring the community together and sell it as a new modern town that people want to visit."

Also speaking at the conference was Cllr Stephen Parnaby, OBE, leader of East Riding Council; Nigel Pearson, chief executive of the council; Alan Menzies, its director of planning and economic regeneration; Andrew Gent, of Capitol Park; and Ian Kelly, chief executive of Hull and Humber Chamber of Commerce.

Goole 2028 was chaired by chamber vice-president Carolyn Burgess, who said she was very pleased for Goole to have been accepted on the Renaissance programme as this would allow bigger investment to take place in the town.

Speaking at the conference she said: "It is a fantastic opportunity for the town and everyone has a part to play."
