Eye tests makes charity cash
Goole Specsavers have raised more than £250 for leading charity Diabetes UK by donating 50p from every eye examination carried out in June.
The donation will be used by the charity to fund local projects which support people with diabetes and go towards their vital research programme.
Store director Robert Winlow told the Goole Times: "We are delighted to be able to donate money to this extremely worthwhile cause. There are currently 2.3 million people who have diabetes in the UK. 12,071 of those are located in East Riding of Yorkshire and more than half a million have Type 2 diabetes but are not aware of it."
He continued: "Every five minutes in the UK someone is diagnosed with diabetes, which is the leading cause of blindness in our working-age population. We urge everyone to have a sight test at least every two years, because an eye examination can detect the onset of diabetes among people who don't even realise they have it.
"All optometrists are trained to spot diabetes during a regular eye examination and Specsavers has more than 2,000 optometrists carrying out nearly six million eye tests a year, which are free to the over 60s, those under 19 in full-time education and of course everyone who has already been diagnosed with diabetes."
As one of the largest organisations in the UK, Diabetes UK works with people with the condition, their carers, family and friends. The charity has more than 180,00 members and invests £7 million each year in research and providing information and support to people with diabetes and campaigning on their behalf.
Linda Wood, regional manager of Diabetes UK in Northern and Yorkshire said: "I am delighted with Specsavers Goole store's donation to us again this year, and would like to thank them for their ongoing support. The funds will go towards vital diabetes research and projects run by local Diabetes UK voluntary groups. Supporting our voluntary groups' great work makes a real difference to local people with diabetes."
On a national scale, Specsavers have managed to raise over £100,00 for the charity fulfilling their donation pledge. Last year the company raised more than £170,000 for Diabetes UK, which helped fund research into retinopathy, a complication of diabetes which can lead to blindness, and diabetes. (14-08-36 GT)
