Goole is now one step closer to its new Arts and Civic centre as market traders moved out of the 'new' market hall.

Earlier this month trading ceased in the hall, which is set to be the site for the town's £2.3 million entertainment and arts building, and work is expected to start within weeks.

All the market's former traders have now been relocated in the Victorian hall.

The plan is to redevelop the 'new' hall site as a state-of-the-art building which will provide the town with a 170-seat auditorium for theatre and cinema projects, workshops, community rooms, a cafe/bar and artists' studios, as well as housing the Goole Town Council offices.

Brian Robertson, clerk to Goole Town Council, told the Goole Times this week: "A large part of the project was moving the traders out of the 'new' market, which has gone very well. We have dismantled all the stalls in the outdoor market so this can be used for the contractor's yard.

"Work is scheduled to start on September 8 but the workers will be on site prior to this date to prepare. We will be utilising the steel portal and concrete base of the existing building."

It is anticipated that the building work will take around 48 weeks to complete and Goole Council look forward to opening the new venue in the autumn of 2009.

The construction is estimated to cost around £2.36 million with funding coming partly from Yorkshire Forward. Goole Town Council also plan to sell their existing office building on Gladstone Terrace to help fund the project, which councillors have called one of the most exciting developments the town has seen.

"It is very exciting. It will bring cinema back to Goole for the first time in 20 something years.

"The new theatre is going to be bigger and better, so we will be able to attract productions which we currently can't - and there will be a cafe/bar which will enhance the town's nightlife.

"Overall there will be better quality facilities than at the current Dunhill Road venue," added Mr Robertson.
