Supermarket boost for gift campaign
Leading supermarket chain Asda has kindly donated to the Goole Gift Campaign.
The Hessle Road branch, in Hull, has given 20 footballs, which will be sent out to the British Troops who are currently serving in Afghanistan and Iraq.
Of the generous donation, founder of the campaign Darren Smith said: "The balls will make a great deal of difference to the boys serving out there, giving them something to do whilst on the rare moments they are stood down.
"Boredom is a great factor which badly affects morale, as most people who have ever taken part on 'operational duties' will know. Most are a case of hurry up and wait.
"Asda's donation is great; it is a shame more local large chains feel they cannot help in the same manner."
As previously reported in the Goole Times, the Goole Gift Campaign has started to spread throughout the county, with Howden hair salon Bobinda's leading the way. The Salon has dedicated its entire window space to promoting the campaign and people can now drop their donations in at Bobinda's.
The campaign would now like similar help from other sources around the area to allow it to grow even further.
"If only one business in each town and village around the area followed Bobindas' example we could ensure the troops get the support they deserve.
"We are so grateful to Linda and her staff at the Salon for their active support as we are with everyone who offers help, but we can't depend on the same people all the time. The troops are there for all of us, therefore any help in promoting the campaign, however small, is very important," Darren added.
The campaign's dinner-dance and auction which has been organised for August 29 at the Vikings Hotel in Goole has also gained more support from the military.
Kerry Smith, campaign co-founder, explained: "Not only are we having the Coldstream Guards at the event, we will also be joined by serving members of the 4th Battalion the Parachute Regiment, including their Regimental Sergeant Major.
"The Parachute Regiment are currently on deployment in Afghanistan, where they are having a really rough time, already losing ten of their comrades to enemy hands, so we are very honoured the Sergeant Major has taken time to join us on the evening.
"Also present at the event will be England International rugby player and patron of the campaign, Jamie Noon."
Tickets for the event have almost sold out, so hurry up and book by contacting Kerry and Darren Smith on 01405 704893.
