Town councillors to look at devising emergency flood plan
Councillors in Snaith are thinking of taking on emergency measures to guard against future flooding.
The council says it is considering devising its own emergency plan at the behest of the East Riding of Yorkshire Council.
On Monday councillors voted to set up a working committee to look into formulating an emergency plan.
The ERYC - which has ultimate responsibility for flood protection in the region - wants all parish and town councils to develop their own plans in case of flooding or any other emergency.
The county-wide scheme is aimed at making local communities self-sufficient and take the lead in the event of an emergency.
The working committee will consist of four councillors; Greta Laughton, who will represent the Snaith Community Sports Hall Comittee; Graham Hume, representing Snaith and Cowick Together; Councillor John Barrett, town mayor Cllr Frank Townshend; and county councillors Caroline Fox and Gordon Megson. It will look into which, if any, of the emergency aspects they are prepared to work on.
So far the town council has steadfastly resisted suggestions by the ERYC that it devises its own emergency plan, which councillors have claimed should be the East Riding's responsibility.
Cllr Fox, who is ward councillor for Snaith, Airmyn, Rawcliffe and the Marshlands, is encouraging the town to devise its own plan and apply for funds from the county council which are available for contingencies.
During Monday's meeting, Cllr Fox suggested the council could invest in empty sandbags that could be filled in an emergency.
