Young artists are to brighten up a part of Drax Power Station with a colourful mural.

The youngsters will create the mural as part of a summer course taken by Yorkshire artist Mark Hearld.

Mark, who has exhibited at various galleries around the UK and is renowned for his paintings of local flora and fauna, is helping Drax organise a summer art school for 7-to 13-year-olds from the surrounding area.

The York-based artist will provide expert advice and guidance during the two-day masterclass at Drax Power Station on Thursday, August 28 and Friday, August 29.

Over the two days, the budding young artists will tour the Drax nature reserve and the materials handling sections of the site.

They will produce their own artistic interpretations of these two contrasting areas, which, once complete, will be pieced together to produce a large mural which will become a permanent feature in the materials handling area.

Mark, who has also been commissioned by Drax to produce a piece that reflects the interaction between the nature reserve and the materials handling sections of the site, said: "When Drax approached me with the idea of hosting a summer art school I was delighted to get involved.

"I think it's a wonderful initiative and a really exciting opportunity for children to learn about and develop their interest in art."

Dorothy Thompson, chief executive of Drax Power Station, said: "As a company, we are very enthusiastic about initiatives which enrich children's imaginations and educational experiences and believe the summer art school will be a practical and enjoyable activity for all involved.

"I, for one, am really looking forward to seeing the children's ideas evolve into a huge mural which will undoubtedly add colour and vibrancy to what is normally quite an industrial-looking area of the site."

The Summer Art School is part of Drax's Art In The Community scheme, which was launched in 2007.
