A man pulled clumps of his wife's hair out after claiming she was having an affair with another man, a court was told.

Colin Barker (48) flew into a rage after he and his wife Michelle had a drunken argument.

The couple had been out for a drink together but once they returned home Mr Barker accused his wife of seeing another man.

He began pulling her hair so hard that some of it came out, Goole magistrates were told.

The father-of-two, of Alexandra Street, Goole, appeared before the town's magistrates' court this week, where he pleaded guilty to assaulting Michelle Barker by beating her on July 26.

John Owston, prosecuting, said the couple had each drunk about five lagers on the night in question. He added that Mr Barker began pulling his wife's hair in the marital bedroom and that, according to Mrs Barker, this was a common occurrence when they argued.

Mr Owston said that, according to Mrs Barker, her husband then punched her in the face as she was trying to get away from him.

Mrs Barker alleged that her husband then let go of her hair but hit her in the face once more.

It is alleged the blows left Mrs Barker with reddening to her right eye and a lump on her forehead.

Police officers who later arrested Mr Barker said they found a mark on Mrs Barker's forehead but none to her eye. They also found Mrs Barker was crying and appeared "well in drink".

After being arrested Mr Barker was taken for questioning, during which he claimed he had pushed his wife onto a sofa downstairs and that, when the couple went upstairs to bed, she straddled him and began punching him in the face.

He said he had retaliated by pushing her in the face but admitted grabbing her hair, and that some might have come out as he did so. For her part, Mrs Barker denied having punched her husband and claimed he did punch rather than push her in the face.

Mr Owston told the court that Mr Barker already had a recent caution resulting from a previous incident with his wife, as well as a nine-month prison sentence, suspended for two years, handed down in April, 2006 for possessing amphetamine with intent to supply.

Ross Wagstaff, defending, said Mr Barker accepted that, in pushing his wife in the face, he might have caused her a minor injury.

Magistrates adjourned the case until August 12 for pre-sentence reports. They allowed Mr Barker unconditional bail until that date.
