Local Action Week branded a success
Many Goole residents chose to take part in the recent Local Action Week, helping tackle issues in the community such as fly-tipping, graffiti and littering.
Around 30 activities took place during the week-long event, which was organised by Safe Communities East Riding, in partnership with East Riding of Yorkshire Council, Humberside Police and a number of community-based groups.
Helen Wheeler-Osman, who organised the event on behalf of the council, said: "It was great to see so many local people of all ages getting involved in all these different activities. Whilst some of the events were clearly about encouraging local residents and organisations to work together to tackle issues such as littering, fly-tipping and graffiti, others were simply about building a sense of community by encouraging people to get out, have fun and try something new."
One of the major success stories of the week was the fly-tipping amnesty in Old Goole, with three skip loads collected and taken away.
People from College, Guide groups from Goole, Snaith and Howden, the React Church Group and local councillors all joined forces to remove the litter and graffiti from the town's streets.
Staff from the council's hedge-trimming service were also on hand to support the group and to ensure any problem areas were tidied up and looking their best.
Litter-picks were also carried out in numerous snickets and graffiti was removed from Weatherill Street, Carlisle Street and the park off Cheviot Avenue.
Out of the 30 activities held during the week low-impact aerobics sessions were amongst the most popular with more than 30 people attending and a five-a-side community football day with 15 teams battling it out on the pitch.
The eventual winning team were the North Eastern Tigers who took home the Local Action Week trophy sponsored by Tesco. The runners up received prizes donated by KC FM and the Federation Against Copyright Theft.
Local schools also got involved during the week by taking part in an inter-primary school five-a-side football tournament organised by The Hinge and Football in the Community.
Helen added: "We would like to thank everyone who helped to organise the different activities and all those who gave up their time to get involved."
Local Action Week is part of the Advance Goole Project which aims to improve the quality of live of people living in the town and tackle the issues which concerns them most. (31-07-05 SU)
