The Goole Gift Campaign for Heroes is expanding.

Anyone wanting to contribute to the campaign can now drop items for the parcels into Bobinda's Hair Salon on Pinfold Street in Howden.

The campaign sends out small parcels filled with home comforts that we may take for granted, like toothpaste, sweets and coffee to troops serving in Iraq and Afghanistan and with local people's support it is going from strength to strength.

Founder of the Gift Campaign Darren Smith said: "The ladies at Bobinda's have very kindly agreed to support and promote the campaign. If every village had a place like this where people can drop donations off it would be great.

"We have had six letters this week from soldiers who are serving thanking us for their gifts, so we know the work is greatly appreciated."

Bobinda's is heavily promoting the campaign by displaying posters all over the salon and are also busy selling tickets for the campaign's raffle, profits from which will go towards supporting the troops.

Also offering their support to the campaign and the troops was prospective Goole MP Andrew Percy, Howden ward Cllr Mark Preston, Snaith, Rawcliffe and Airmyn ward Councillors Caroline Fox and Gordon Megson, who joined the Bobinda's staff to launch their involvement in the campaign.

Cllr Mark Preston said: "It is really great for Howden to get behind the campaign. The more support we get and the more funds we can raise the better the campaign can be."

Andrew Percy added: "They are doing a great job and we are happy to do our bit to support this non-political and very well intentioned campaign."

Also to help raise money and awareness of the cause Darren and his partner Kerry have organised a charity dinner/dance which is to be held at the Vikings Hotel on August 29.

'A Night Fit For Heroes' is a celebration for our brave armed forces and will include a charity auction of unique prizes.

One of the many prizes on offer is a once-in-a-lifetime chance to skydive with the Red Devils.

Other prizes being donated include a luxury day out at the races and a chance to be Jeremy Clarkson for the weekend with a free hire of a top-of-the-range Jaguar.

A list of items suitable for donation for the parcels is also available on the website.
