A 19-year-old man has been given a two-year community order for assaulting his former girlfriend in the street.

James Duckett is said to have pushed his ex-partner in the face after they argued in the street.

The victim, who was named in court, claims the attack was unprovoked.

Mr Duckett, of Byron Street in Goole, claims he was provoked.

On Tuesday Mr Duckett appeared at the town's Magistrates' Court where he admitted common assault on June 8 this year.

Amee Patel, prosecuting, said the assault happened after the victim and her friend were walking back from the shops on Boothferry Road.

The victim spotted her ex-boyfriend on the corner of Byron Street and he became abusive towards her.

Ms Patel said that Mr Duckett either slapped or pushed the woman in the face, causing a small cut to the inside of her lip.

The victim then ran off crying and called the police from a friend's home.

Mr Duckett was arrested and admitted pushing his ex-girlfriend in the face while they were arguing.

He said his ex-partner had been "getting in his face".

Willem Louw, defending, said Mr Duckett admitted threatening and pushing his ex-girlfriend once in the face.

He added that the couple had had a three-year relationship, which ended a couple of months before the incident occurred.

"He says he loves her and he hates her,' said Mr Louw.

He added that, according to Mr Duckett, there had been "a lot of provocation" leading up to the assault.

Mr Duckett claimed his ex-partner had walked up to him and "gave verbally as good as she got," said Mr Louw.

Magistrates gave Mr Duckett a 24-month community order including an integrated domestic-abuse programme and supervision by the probation service.

He was also ordered to pay £100 compensation to his victim.
