A councillor has commended residents in Snaith for their 'brilliant' fundraising efforts, which have allowed a sports association to build a new pavilion.

Cllr Danny Hennessy told a meeting of Snaith and Cowick Town Council that the shell of the temporary building had now been erected and plans were now afoot to embellish the pavilion, thanks to local fundraising.

He said: "Its been brilliant, the help we have had from the local community."

Cllr Hennessy said the electricity and water had already been connected inside the building at Snaith Sports Fields at South Parkway.

It would eventually include a fitted kitchen, communal area, two changing rooms and showers.

The long-term aim was to have a permanent, brick-built pavilion on the site when enough money had been raised.

The sports fields were set up about two years ago after housing developer Ben Bailey Homes entered into a Section 106 agreement with the East Riding of Yorkshire Council.

A Section 106 agreement is where a housing developer provides a much-needed community facility as a condition for being granted planning permission for a new housing estate.

The sports fields are used by junior football teams, who will be able to use the changing-room facilities in the pavilion once they are complete.

Snaith Community Sports Fields Association, which runs the facility, decided that the sports teams who use the recreational grounds should have a temporary one in the meantime.

However, news that the pavilion was starting to take shape was tempered by reports that vandals and thieves had targeted the new building.

Cllr Hennessy said that bricks that had been bought by money raised through fundraising events - such as raffles and a 24-hour darts marathon at The Plough Inn - had been stolen.

He added that minor damage had been caused to drainpipes at the back of the pavilion.

"We think it was some youths trying to climb up the back," said Cllr Henessy. Someone spotted them on the roof of the pavilion in the early hours of the morning."

Both incidents have been reported to police.
