The possibility of another wave of strikes by non-teaching staff at Goole-area schools loomed large again this week.

UNISON, the public-sector union which backed the recent two-day protest by dinner ladies, teaching assistant and caretakers last week, said it was now considering "the next steps in this dispute".

On Wednesday, just before the Goole Times went to press, the union's negotiating committee was due to meet to discuss last week's two-day strike and whether any further action should be taken.

Schools affected by the two-day walk out last week included Vermuyden School, Howden School & Technology College, Marshlands Primary, Kingsway Primary and Snaith School.

All five schools were closed as workers staged a protest over what they claim is a derisory 2.45 per cent, below-inflation pay rise for non-teaching staff.

A total of 2,911 pupils were off school over the two days. It is thought the main reason behind the decision to close the schools was the fact that there would be no lunchtime supervisors to watch over the children at break-times.
