A planning application has been made by developers Sterling Capitol for a new bat roost at their Capitol Park development near Goole.

The Leeds-based developers want to build the bats a new home to replace the one at New Potter Grange which was recently destroyed by a fire.

Sterling Capitol has submitted the proposals for the new roost at Capitol Park, the £237 million, 310-acre business park off the M62, to East Riding County Council and they will be discussed later this month.

Simon Clarke, development director of Sterling Capitol, commented: "We hope the bats that survived the fire at New Potter Grange will return. We will have no idea of numbers until they actually start inhabiting the new roost.

"The bat roost will be another asset of the 100-acre country park and nature reserve. It's a very natural fit and we hope it's a great success. We are extremely lucky to have such an excellent local attraction on our doorstep.

"Sterling Capitol will be working in conjunction with the council and their countryside officers to ensure that the benefits of the country park are widely accessible. We would like to realise the council's aspirations of securing the country park and ensuring the habitat of protected species is enhanced in this nature reserve."

More than 1,500 jobs have already been created at Capitol Park with a Tesco distribution centre and Guardian Glass manufacturing factory.

Council leader Stephen Parnaby said he believed the Goole business park development was crucial to the region's economy. "The Capitol Park development is crucially important, not just for Goole but the whole of the East Yorkshire and Humber regions," he said.

"Overall, it is likely to create more than 5,000 quality and sustainable jobs and play a crucial part in promoting the economic prosperity of the region."

Sterling Capitol is also building a road through the site as an integral part of the development. The road will provide a link between the M62, the port of Goole and the town centre.

Owen Holder of property consultancy Knight Frank in Leeds commented: "Capitol Park is unrivalled within the region for its communication capabilities. It is a gem of a development and is, without doubt, one of the finest business parks in the region."
