Mother admits money scam
A LATVIAN mother faces a suspended prison sentence after being caught in a £5,600 internet banking scam traced to Goole.
Ilze Korsiete (23) aroused suspicion with another Latvian man as they tried to buy £4,000-worth of euros from a Goole travel agent, who reported the transaction to the police.
Ms Korsiete, of St John's Court in Goole, appeared at Hull Crown Court last Thursday after initially denying criminal activity but pleaded guilty to a charge of being concerned in a money laundering agreement between March 31 and April 19, 2007.
Ms Korsiete, dressed in a smart suit, stood in the dock of court three and pleaded guilty to the charge at the eleventh hour before a trial.
Recorder David Bradshaw told her: "This is a serious offence which seems to me to deserve a prison sentence. But because of your personal circumstances you will not have to serve it immediately."
Ms Korsiete, a single parent, was caught after £5,600 was deposited in to her NatWest bank account in Goole.
Humberside Police investigations into her transactions revealed the £5,600 had illegally been taken from a Cambridgeshire man's bank account after his details had been illegally phished from the internet.
Within the space of a week £1,000 had been withdrawn from two different cash points in Goole. Ms Korsiete was then seen to visit the Goole travel agent to buy euros. After police were alerted she was interviewed and said she knew very little about the man who had accompanied her to the travel agents, except that he had helped her find work. She had sought work in a local factory when she arrived three years ago.
Ms Korsiete denied involvement in the stealing of the Cambridge man's banking details.
Recorder Bradshaw ordered Ms Korsiete to stand as he told he was considering a suspended prison sentence but wanted a pre-sentence report on her background to be prepared by the probation service before making a conclusion
He told her she would be granted bail in the meantime. Ms Korsiete is to be sentenced at Hull Crown Court on August 11.
