A 19-year-old man punched his ex-girlfriend in the face during a heated argument.

James David Duckett, of Byron Street in Goole, admitted assault by beating when he appeared before town magistrates on Monday.

The incident happened on June 8 this year when Mr Duckett came across Dionne Stevens on Byron Street and began haranguing her, the court was told.

Heather Levett, prosecuting, said Mr Duckett had been in a relationship with Miss Stevens for two and a half years but they split up two months ago.

She said that, on the day of the attack, Miss Stevens was walking home after shopping on Boothferry Road.

Mr Duckett spotted his former girlfriend on the corner of Byron Street and became verbally abusive towards her.

An argument ensued and Mr Duckett either punched or slapped Miss Stevens in the face, said Ms Levett.

This caused a small cut to Miss Stevens' upper lip and she started to cry.

She then walked to her friend's house and called the police.

In police interview Mr Duckett admitted punching Miss Stevens in the face. He claimed they had been arguing and she was "in his face", said Ms Levett.

In a statement written by Miss Stevens, which Miss Levett read out in court, the victim said she was frightened of Mr Duckett and added that she could not get on with her life because "he's always wrecking it".

Magistrates adjourned sentencing for probation reports to be compiled.

Mr Duckett will reappear before the court on July 22. He was released on bail on condition that he does not contact Miss Stevens.
