Crime victims in Goole are being advised to contact the Victim Support office in Hull rather than the one in their home town.

The aim, according to Victim Support, is to improve the service for people in Goole and the rest of the Humber region.

It's understood the Victim Support on Jefferson Street - which is currently open on a part-time basis - will be relocated to another site in Goole.

But people who want to make an initial call to the charity are now being urged to ring the Hull office.

Victim Support insists there will be no change to the service provision for Goole residents and that the office will not be moving out of the town.

Mervyn Bishop, Victim Support's area manager for the Humber, said: "Victim Support througout the country has been going through a big programme of change over the last two years.

"We are changing our whole process of delivering support. What we are trying to do is give the people of Goole and the Humber a far better service.

"We can see people quicker now - there's nothing for people to fear."

He added that, unlike the Goole office - which opens from 9.30am to 1.30pm five days a week - the Hull office provides a service from 8am to 8pm five days a week.

"We have not moved out of Goole," said Mr Bishop. "We are still delivering exactly the same service to the people in Goole. The only thing that's changed is that victims can now call us from 8am to 8pm."

He added: "If people want to see us we can still see them. We will be changing the office in Goole but are still making arrangements to see people there, (as well as) in their homes and in the community centres."

Mr Bishop said the Goole office - where the service runs a project for victims of hate crime - "may not stay in the same location".

He advised crime victims in the area to ring the Hull number, which would avail them of "a far better service than they've ever had before".

He said "enhanced services" offered by the Hull office included glaziers who mended broken windows for victims of crime.

There was also a new web-based system for users and needs assessments in operation.

The Hull Victim Care office can be contacted on: 01482 305080.
