Soldiers says thanks for gifts from home
The Adjutant of the Second Battalion of the Parachute Regiment, who are at present serving out in Afghanistan, recently wrote to the Goole Gift Campaign to thank them and the people of Goole for their support while they are serving in Afghanistan.
Whilst on their gruelling tour the Paras have lost seven of their men as a result of enemy attacks.
Captain Rutsch wrote: "I write from a dirty corner of Afghanistan to thank you for your kind letters and parcels. The support we have received during our time here has been overwhelming.
"It is humbling to know while we are out here there are people like yourselves, whom we have never met, thinking of us."
The letter went on to say that the Battalion will continue to fight in memory of the seven friends and colleagues they have lost and to ensure their sacrifice was not in vain.
Campaign founder Darren Smith said: "Reading the letter proves we have the best fighting men in the world out there. Even after such a sad loss their resolve remains unbroken to make a difference to the people of Afghanistan. We should be so proud of every one of them and support them in all they do. They are indeed 'second to none'."
To help support the Goole Gift Campaign an auction is being held at the Vikings Hotel as part of the Harker Building Services sponsored event 'A Night Fit For Heroes' on August 29.
The Parachute Regiment also supported the campaign by donating a once-in-a-lifetime chance for someone to experience the adrenalin rush of tandem skydiving with the best in the business - The Parachute Regiment Freefall Display team, The Red Devils.
Campaign co-founder Kerry Smith said: "This is an amazing lot for anyone to win; the auction prizes just get better and better. They can all be viewed now on line by visiting our website at www.gooleheroes.btik.com and viewing the calendar section.
"We are also taking bids on all the lots now prior to the evening for people who want to support the campaign but cannot be there on the night. Information of how to do this is on the site. Another great prize we had donated this week is a 22 inch squared print of the record cover of the song Kayleigh, sung by rock band Marillion."
The evening is going to be one of the main events to hit Goole this year with guests including England Rugby star Jamie Noon and the Regimental Sergeant Major and Guardsmen from the world famous Coldstream Guards who themselves have just returned from a six month operational tour in Afghanistan.
Of the night Darren said: "The night is not just a fund-raising event, it is a celebration of our great armed forces and chance for all to dust off their dinner suits and evening gowns and enjoy great food and excellent live music and actually speak to the brave men who have faced the dangers. We only have 40 of the original 230 tickets left, so if anyone is interested they must book soon!"
For more information and to purchase tickets contact the campaigns website at www.gooleheroes.btik.com or by ring 01405 704893.
