An award ceremony which recognises, rewards and celebrates the people working to tackle drugs and change lives has been launched by Home Office Minister Vernon Coaker.

At the Tackling Drugs Changing Lives Awards two awards will be presented, one to an individual and the other to a team, who make a real difference in the local community.

The search is now on for unsung heroes in the East Riding area examples include those who help with diversionary sports training, drug enforcement activity or professionals who counsel and treat drug users.

The winners of each award will receive £10,000 for their organisation, which will go towards the prevention or treatment of drug misuse.

Vernon Coaker said: "Drug workers and drug teams across the country work tirelessly everyday to tackle drugs and change lives.

"In recent years we have introduced tough legislation to tackle drug supply and remain committed to informing young people of the dangers of drug use through information campaigns like FRANK."

"Our goals cannot be achieved without the professionals and volunteers such as those nominated for these awards."

The launch of the awards follows the success of the National Tackling Drugs Week, which gave police officers and treatment agencies the chance to highlight and promote the work they carry out.

Fiona Conyers, East Riding drug action officer, said: "These awards offer a chance for us to recognise the hard work and dedication of individuals and services in the East Riding who help to reduce the harm caused by drugs.

"I hope that people will take this opportunity to nominate those who have made a difference to families and communities."

Ten finalist will be selected by a panel of judges, chaired by the Home Office.

The closing date for entries is August 30 so if you know someone who deserves to be recognised then nominate them now by calling safe communities, on (01482) 391014 or by picking up a nomination form from any of the drug treatment centres across the East Riding.
