Gifted pupils head for business school
Two talented students from the Trinity Academy in Thorne have won places at one of the country's most famous seats of learning this summer.
Danielle Busby and Fiona Green are brushing up on their business knowledge after being offered places on a prestigious course at the University of Cambridge's summer business school.
The pair will be among 60 of the country's most gifted youngsters who are attending the five-day residential course, which starts this August.
It aims to show students who are preparing to step up to sixth form education how academic skills are put to use in a business environment.
Whilst on the course Danielle and Fiona, both 16, will be staying at one of the university's colleges throughout the week, where they will be able to learn more about student life and speak to current undergraduates.
Danielle, who eventually hopes to become a teacher, said: "I'm looking forward to meeting all of these different people.
"We were really surprised when we found out we'd been chosen, but it's an absolutely fantastic opportunity and we can't wait to get there."
Fiona added: "It will be amazing for us to be somewhere as famous and well-respected as the University of Cambridge and the course will be a great experience that will hopefully stand us in good stead in the future."
As part of a team they will also have the opportunity to work on tough business-related challenges which will be devised by leading finance and legal companies Lehman Brothers and Clifford Chance.
Recent graduate employees will be on hand to talk to the group of students about how university has helped shape their career paths and they will also hear from representatives from some of the biggest business firms in the city.
For two students to be selected for the business course is a major achievement for the Trinity Academy, which itself specialises in business and enterprise.
Academy principal Ian Brew said: "Everybody here was thrilled to learn that two of our students had been selected for this course.
"There was high demand for the places. Schools across the country were told that having one student selected would be a huge achievement, so for Trinity Academy to have two is incredible and a real tribute to the students' hard work."
