Country Notes
Our dog, a chocolate labrador called Chip, was creating something awful the other day, barking and pawing at the window, In fact, I was afraid it was going to break through it!
What was it all about? Was it an intruder or a cat venturing into his territory?
No, it was a mole - something Chip had never seen before, and was obviously quite concerned about.
In fact it was quite an unusual sight to see a mole wandering around on the lawn, in broad daylight, its black, velvety body gleaming in the sun, and its white clawed feet paddling through the grass.
It soon disappeared into the undergrowth, and no doubt underground again. The next day I found a new mole-hill on the lawn, and wondered if I should have let Chip loose to frighten it away from our garden.
Moles are the bane of most gardeners, as mole hills can disfigure their garden, making lawns so undulating, so soft where the runs are and, of course, leaving the very visible mole-hills.
Then they leave plants with their roots hanging lifeless in a run, and therefore killing them off.
There have been so many suggestions for mole deterrents - from putting bottles in their run to putting a hose-pipe down with water, or using fumes.
But what I find quite amazing is that a garden with so many mole-hills in it is usually the work of just one mole.
