Staff at Goole's Netto store has been made to undergo extra training after dozens of food items were left to defrost in full view of shoppers.

The incident happened on April 8 this year when staff began a clean-up of freezers and shelves at the Vermuyden Way store.

Customers complained that staff were putting frozen food items - including chicken, turkey, fishfingers, chips and vegetables - in trolleys in the shopping aisles.

Some customers said they had to step over electrical cables, hose pipes and puddles of water.

They also claimed that the clean-up wasn't announced by the store.

Following the fiasco, Netto immediately suspended cleaning operations of such kinds and launched a full investigation.

This week the store chain announced it had ordered staff at the Goole store to go on hygiene and safety training courses following the investigation.

A Netto spokeswoman said: "Following an in-depth assessment, we have introduced new procedures relating to the deep clean of our stores' freezers.

"All of the management at Netto Goole have also been re-trained and attended supplementary food hygiene and safety courses as part of their ongoing development."
