OUTSTANDING!
Staff and students at Goole College are celebrating this week after receiving the highest possible Ofsted result.
The College was examined by the Department For Standards in Education in six categories including: Effectiveness of provision, Capacity to improve, Achievement and standards, Quality of provision, Leadership and management and Equality of opportunity.
The Inspectors awarded the College, which is part of the Hull College group, an 'Outstanding' grade across the board.
Goole College is just one of 16 institutes out of a list of 400 that can boast of receiving such high marks from the Government Inspectors.
David Caldicott, centre manager at Goole College, believes the result is a big achievement for Goole. "We are so proud to have been recognised in this way. Not only is it wonderful for the College but it is great for Goole as well, because our students will go on to become the future of the region. One phrase stood out and that was "Hull College's role in changing the lives of many learners is significant," he said. "For me that is the ultimate compliment."
Inspectors from Ofsted, an external body employed by the Government to inspect educational institutes, visit schools and colleges to check standards every four years. Since their last visit Ofsted inspectors stated the College had made excellent progress.
Achieving the 'Outstanding' grade, which is the highest an inspector can award an institution in an Ofsted report, further establishes the role of the College in the region and local community.
The report commended Goole Colleges on their success rates, stating:
"Success rates are high and improving. The overall success rate (for long courses) in 2007 is significantly above the national average for similar Colleges. The College has a history of exceeding target.
"The personal and social development of full time 16-18 year olds is outstanding. They enjoy their time at the College and attendance is very good.
"Many develop confidence and self-esteem through the many opportunities to take an active role in the life of the College and the community."
The report also commended the high level and variety of enrichment activities available at the College for their students, summarising:
"Enrichment activities are extensive and designed well to interest and challenge students' thinking on a wide range of themes such as political freedom, active citizenship, health issues and how to stay safe.
"A wide range of sports and social activities are enjoyed by many learners."
The College was also highly praised for its empowering and inclusive culture, its outstanding guidance and support, as well as for the exceptional progress the students make whilst studying there.
Hull College chief executive and principal, Elaine McMahon, praised her team highly for their hard work.
She said: "This Ofsted report recognises the skill and dedication of Hull College staff in providing an excellent learning opportunity for all students, employers and stakeholders.
"The College benefits from a strong and innovative governing body who are dedicated to improving the life chances for all learners.
"I am very proud of the College's role as a major influence in helping to regenerate Hull and the region and as a leading college in the further education sector."
