The Post Office in Hedley Court on Boothferry Road was visited by Goole MP Ian Cawsey this week.

Mr Cawsey went along to support the Post offices campaign to keep the card account POCA2 with them.

Currently more than four million people choose to access their benefits using the electronic card at Post Offices every week.

Now the Government has put the scheme out to tender and are awaiting the results of this.

Mr Cawsey said: "Many customers from Hedley Court and other post offices in the area have signed postcards backing the campaign. Obviously, the value of a contract that delivers a service to millions of people is very high and it is required by law to go through a tendering process.

"Notwithstanding that, the Government is well aware of the importance to the Post Office of this contract. Whilst I have already made representations to keep this service in our local post offices, I will of course be making ministers aware of the strength of feeling locally and I am grateful for the input from Mark and his customers."

Without the POCA2 around 3,000 Post Offices will be forced to close.
