To mark Volunteer Week Goole residents have been joining together to promote volunteering across the area.

The aim of the annual event is to recognise, recruit and reward volunteers.

Goole resident Richard Neno (pictured right) volunteered because he wanted to do something more with his life. He has since completed more than 2,000 hours in voluntary work, helping with painting, woodwork and general labouring at the drop-in centre in Goole to help get it up and running.

Richard also went on the Youth in Action French exchange, which included volunteering to work on an organic farm and helping in a French restaurant.

He said: "I have met many new people. Through the Youth in Action French exchange I have tried new foods and changed my diet. I have more confidence and am trying things I would never have done before. I have enjoyed volunteering so much and am now involved with the Swedish Youth Exchange.

"I definitely recommend that people try volunteering."

Also pictured are the volunteers in the STEPS programme, which has been running for a year. It is part of the RATS scheme and aims to provide one-to-one support to children in primary and secondary schools who need a little extra support with reading or worries about the move to high school.

Alan Jefferson has been volunteering in the programme. He said: "When I left the council after nearly 30 years I decided I still needed to work to help other people. My main role is to assist with literacy, which entails assessing reading abilities by listening to the children read or discussing the books with them.

"I would recommend volunteering to other people but it is important to give careful consideration to the activity that you are going to get involved with."
