Following the article on a barge trip from Goole to Newcastle by Mr Alan Dudding in a recent Goole Times, we have been sent further information and photographs by Mr Allan Lister, of Sycamore Close in Goole.

Mr Lister says that the launch of the Kimberley in the picture last week was in August, 1959 at C. Campling (Goole) Ltd's Dog and Duck yard.

"The man in the wheelhouse is Jack Lister (my father)," says Allan. "The engineer behind him is Alexander 'Sandy' Bruce and the man at the side is Allan himself. The ship was one of four built for Associated Lead Manufacturing, Newcastle. The vessels were Bywell, James Leathart, Wylam and Kimberley (pictured, right).

"Some of the crew that delivered the vessel were the boss - Claude Campling, general foreman - Jack Lister, draughtsman - Alan Franks, engineer - Tommy Simms, deck hands - Joe Brookes and Eddie O'Brian.

"Other people involved with the building of the vessel were all nicknamed 'Camplings Fusiliers' . They were Bob Haslam, George Henger, Joe Brooks, Joe Marshal, Cyril Rutter, Arthur Walker, Ovred Overington, Jack Whitfield, Sid Smith, Dave Scarl and Allan Chatham, plus the delivery crew names.

"When the ship sailed they had no sea or river charts and the compass was a hand-held one borrowed from me! And I also went along for the adventure, being 14 years old at the time.

"Right is a picture of the ship being prepared to be launched by some of the people named above. There were many more memorable seas journeys after this one.

"What Alan (Dudding) failed to tell us was that beside building boats and sea adventures he was also an emergency fireman. (The station at this time was down Stanhope Street).

"When the fire buzzer sounded Alan would down tools, jump on his racing bike and pedal off to the station to see if he was needed. If not he would come back to work and carry on with the job.

"Above is a picture of the annual dinner dance held by C. Campling (Goole) Ltd at the Cross Keys Hotel, Bubwith in the 1950s. On the picture is Mrs May Campling, Jack Lister (dad), Harriet Lister (mum), Mr Jack Young, and Mrs Cotter.

"Does anyone recognise any others in the party?" (12-06-74 & 75 SU)
