Mayor selection gets shake-up
Snaith and Cowick Town Council is changing the way it elects a mayor and deputy.
The move follows the controversy surrounding the re-election of Cllr Frank Townshend as town mayor and the decision not to elevate former deputy Cllr Greta Lawton.
Last month Cllr Lawton claimed she had been "kicked in the teeth" when councillors decided to give the mayoral chains to Cllr Townshend for a second term of office.
She said she was bitterly upset because the natural procedure for two councils is for a deputy to become mayor.
At this week's meeting of Snaith and Cowick Town Council, members were told about the new laws for the election of a mayor and deputy, which involves the proposer and seconder being named and filling out a form.
Councillors voted to adopt the new procedure, which, it is hoped, will prevent a repeat of the controversy surrounding Cllr Lawton's non-election.
At this week's meeting Cllr Lawton asked the council why it did not have a constitution like other councils in the region.
Town clerk Cath Hird told her the council followed certain standing orders.
