A Snaith housewife racially abused her neighbour, calling her a "Pilipino b***h".

Amanda Wetherell (33), breached a conditional discharge turning on neighbour Virginia Wooding at her home while she was having building work done.

Mrs Wetherell fell out with the Woodings soon after they moved into Chestnut Close at Snaith, with two young boys and a girl aged three last year, Hull Crown Court heard on Friday.

There had been an argument about loud music being played in the Wetherells' home. When the builders began improving the Woodings' house, Mrs Wetherell went around to complain about them, Crown barrister Helen Hendry told Hull Crown Court.

Ms Hendry said Mrs Wetherell went around on September 28 and told Mrs Wooding: "Your husband is a paedophile" and called her a "Pilipino b***ch".

Part of the conversation was witnessed by a tradesman and Mrs Wooding complained to her mother-in-law. The police were called and arrested Mrs Wetherell, who at the time had been conditionally discharged by Scarborough Magistrates' Court for harassing her former husband.

When quizzed by police, she denied making racist comments - saying she had simply gone to see her neighbour about the building work. However Mrs Wetherell, of Chestnut Close, Snaith, pleaded guilty to a charge of racially-aggravated harassment before a trial, but denied making comments about Mr Wooding.

Ms Hendry said Mrs Wooding's victim impact report revealed she had suffered anxiety and guilt and would never forget the day she was abused. Ms Hendry said Mrs Wooding had come to this country hoping for a happy future. "She has not only moved house, but left the area so that she does not come into contact with the defendant again," added Ms Hendry.

Defence barrister Paul Genney said Mrs Wetherell was not working and has her own children and new partner, an engineer who repairs tankers, who was supporting her in court.

He said at the time of the incident she was feeling low, suffered from migraine and acted out of character. "She is described by neighbours as having a liberal outlook on life," said Mr Genney.

Recorder Paul Watson, QC, told Mrs Wetherell: "I cannot turn a blind eye to this conduct. It is bad enough being insulted, but aggravated by this abuse."

He said he had to mark the severity of the case by a prison sentence, but saw no public interest in making a mother with children serve it.

Mrs Wetherell was given a six-month suspended prison sentence and ordered her to complete 100-hours of unpaid work in the community.
