Howden Youth Café is to open only one night a week instead of two because of a lack of funds.

The popular drop-in centre for the young has been held two nights a week for the past 12 months.

But now workers are having to ditch the Thursday-evening sessions because they can't secure extra funding.

The youth cafe, which is held at the Shire Hall, has been funded by Howden Town Council and the East Riding of Yorkshire Council has also contributed to the cost of youth workers.

Town Councillor Christine Burton, who chairs the Youth Cafe Committee, said the committee was "very disappointed" to have to make the decision.

"We have tried to secure grant-aid from external sources to keep the cafe open on a Thursday night, but without success," she said.

"I'm afraid Howden's position does not tick the right boxes on the grant application forms."

She added that youth workers, together with youngsters who use the centre and the town council, were looking at ways of securing the extra funding that would enable the youth cafe to stay open on Thursdays. The cost of this extra night is about £3,000.

The Thursday sessions will come to an end at the end of June.
