Know who is visiting your home!
Humberside Police are launching a new campaign to raise awareness about bogus callers.
As part of the campaign radio advertisements, billboards and buses are being used to put forward the message 'Can you be sure who is coming through your door?' to the public.
The activity of bogus callers is also being highlighted with the distribution of posters and leaflets throughout the local community.
Assistant Chief Constable Alan Leaver said: "Bogus callers often target the most vulnerable members of our communities and it is the aim of this campaign to increase awareness and make everyone think a little more carefully about who they are opening their door to."
The campaign is driving three main messages to hammer home the dangers of bogus callers. These are:
• Appearances can be deceptive - bogus callers often look respectable but are deceitful;
• Together we can shut the door on these criminals;
• If in doubt, keep them out.
Mr Leaver said: "Most people who call at your home will be genuine. But sometimes people turn up unannounced with the intentions of tricking their way into your home and stealing valuables and money.
"Bogus callers may pose as an official caller from a local authority or a utility company, gas,electricity or water, with a plausible excuse for needing to enter the house."
Humberside Police are advising people to pay heed to the following advice: LOCK, STOP, CHAIN and CHECK.
Always keep doors locked, even when you are home. Before answering the door stop and think if you are expecting anyone and look through the spy-hole or window to see who it is.
If you decide to open the door, make sure the chain is on. Some bogus callers call on older residents saying they need urgent help. Only go to help them if you have someone else with you.
If someone who looks official calls at your door, always check their identity card. Only let them in when you are absolutely sure they are genuine.
If you have had any experience with bogus callers please report them to: 0845 60 60 222 or for more information and advise visit www.humberside.police.uk
