Well, we have had some sunny days, and last weekend I saw my first red admiral butterfly of the year, which I was very pleased about - it is a beautiful butterfly, very majestic with its tiara of rubies.

However, I have been very disappointed with the amount of butterflies seen fluttering around my garden, particularly on Monday when it was very hot and sunny and I only saw one green-veined white.

An ideal butterfly weather day and to just see one butterfly was rather perplexing.

Gardens are looking very lush and colourful, with all the shrubs coming into flower, and all the geraniums and bedding etc.

However, my laburnum and lilac seem to have finished flowering very quickly this year - perhaps it is because they came into flower earlier than normal - so I suppose you can't have it both ways.

I have seen and heard most of the migrant birds: swallow, house martin, swift, blackcap, lesser whitethroat, and heard the plaintiff call of the willow warbler, but as yet I have not heard the cuckoo.

I'm sure it will be around, but it has not ventured onto my patch. If I don't hear it soon I will not hear it this year - as my 96-year-old mother recalls the old rhyme from her childhood - "Cuckoo in April, Cuckoo in May, Cuckoo in June and then she flies away." Has anyone heard the cuckoo this year?
