A Goole woman has been prosecuted for dishonestly claiming more that £2,500 in benefits.

Natalie Gillan (25), formerly of Lime Tree Gardens, was prosecuted after failing to give a prompt notification of change in circumstances following a joint investigation by East Riding Council and the Department for Works and Pensions. She claimed the money in housing, council tax and income support benefits.

Goole Magistrates' Court sentenced Ms Gillan to a two-year order of conditional discharge and ordered her to pay £75 towards costs on May 21.

Ms Gillan will also have to pay back the £2659.57 in benefits she received whilst claiming fraudulently between August 7, 2006 and January 7, 2007.

Fraud investigators discovered that while claiming benefits she had failed to declare her employment.

Richard Johnson, sanctions officer for the council, said: "Anyone who receives housing benefit or council tax benefit from the council has a duty to tell the authority if their circumstances change. If they fail to do so, then they run the risk of being prosecuted."

Anyone who suspects benefit fraud in the East Riding area can call the 24-hour benefit fraud hotline in confidence on 01482 394949, text 07786200850 or email bfraud@eastriding.gov.uk
