Two local MPs have launched an audacious cross-party bid to reduce tolls on the Humber Bridge.

Goole's Labour MP Ian Cawsey and Tory Greg Knight have tabled an amendment to the Local Transport Bill (Lords). If the amendment is passed would reduce Humber Bridge tolls to:

* 60p for a car or goods vehicle up to 3.5 tonnes in weight.

* £1.20 for a goods vehicle between 3.5 tonnes and 7.5 tonnes, or a small bus.

* £2.70 for a goods vehicle over 7.5 tonnes with two axles, or a large bus.

* £4.50 for a goods vehicle over 7.5 tonnes with more than two axles.

Motorcycles, pedestrians and bicycles would be free.

The amendment has been supported by other MPs in the region such as Shona McIsaac, Austin Mitchell, Elliot Morley and Graham Stuart.

The Rt Hon Greg Knight MP said: "Mr Cawsey said: "The issue of tolls is one I have campaigned on for years and it is good to have growing support from others to try to deal with this matter.

"In many ways this (the cross-party bid) is an audacious attempt to force the issue, but the clerks to the House were clear that this is in order. Of course, it is still a matter for the Speaker as to which amendments are called for debate, but we are doing all we can to try to get this in front of the House and to seek support from other colleagues to reduce these tolls.

"Hopefully, fortune will benefit the brave!"
