Lying driver banned
A chef caught driving illegally has been given a 12-month motoring ban after giving false details to police.
Pir Ahmet Dogan (29) was stopped in the early hours of May 15 by officers on patrol on Airmyn Road, Goole.
When they asked Mr Dogan for his details he told then his name was Ali Dogan and that he lived on Carlisle Street; he actually lives on Pasture Road.
However, following an ID check by police, Mr Dogan's ruse began to unravel as officers discovered the car was not licensed in the name he gave.
When he was later asked by police why he had given a false name Mr Dogan, who is a Turkish national, said he was "scared".
When asked who Ali Dogan was, he said he was a former colleague.
Police arrested Mr Dogan - who was driving his father's Vauxhall Corsa when stopped by officers - at the Amigos takeaway on Pasture Road, Goole, where he works as a chef.
Police seized the vehicle because Mr Dogan had no insurance.
Mr Dogan - who was banned from driving in 2006 after a previous motoring offence - appeared at Goole Magistrates' Court this week where he admitted obstructing a police officer in the execution of his duty, and driving a car with no insurance and otherwise in accordance with a licence.
Nicholas Clay, defending, said Mr Dogan was on his way to pick a friend up when he was stopped by police at 4.30am.
He added: "It was simply panic on his part when he was stopped by police and he gave a name that was virtually his name."
Mr Clay said the Carlisle Street address that Mr Dogan gave was actually a place the chef paid rent on.
He said Mr Dogan's attempts at avoiding arrest were "clumsy and unsophisticated".
Magistrates fined Mr Dogan a total of £350 for the three offences and added eight points to his licence.
The eight extra points - together with six existing points Mr Dogan already had on his licence - meant that he was over the 12-point limit and was therefore banned from driving for 12 months.
Magistrates also ordered him to pay £43 prosecution costs and a £15 victim surcharge.
