The first four streets in Goole to receive a face-lift as part of East Riding of Yorkshire Council's 'Changing Streets' project are nearing completion.

Work began on terraced homes in Alexandra Street and Kingston Street in February, and then got under way in Milton Street and Humber Street during March. The project has seen 111 privately-owned homes on the four streets completely transformed with brand new upvc doors and windows, which residents were able to select for themselves from a choice of styles and colours.

The properties were cleaned and re-pointed, restoring them to how they would have looked more than 100 years ago when they were first built. In some areas, brickwork which had become heavily stained and discoloured over the years now looks as good as new.

Where properties had had some form of render or coating applied to their exterior walls and this had deteriorated, they were re-coated with an insulating render to improve their energy efficiency.

Again, residents were given a range of different-coloured finishes to choose from. Great care was taken to preserve and, where possible, highlight the attractive period features of the properties.

Philip Bristow, housing renewal officer for the project, explained: "Different properties presented us with different issues, whether it be tackling the effects of 100 years of exposure to the elements or the need to remove paint from the entire front elevation of a property, including the door and window surrounds.

"We have also managed to reinstate the original boundary walls on Kingston Street, which has added more character to the appearance of this part of the town. We're delighted with the results and feedback from residents has been extremely positive. We're hoping to hold some sort of celebration in the coming weeks to mark the completion of work in these four streets and are currently in discussion with residents about what form this should take."

Of the 113 households invited to participate in phase one of Changing Streets, only two declined to do so. Funding for the project has come from the government and been allocated by the Humber Partnership Group, and will be used to restore and improve an additional 750 homes during the next three years. To build on the early success of Changing Streets, the council will be launching the second phase of the project later this year. This will benefit residents in a further eight areas of Goole - Argyle Street, Axholme Street, Carlisle Street, Cecil Street, Edinburgh Street, Sotheron Street, Sutton Street and Third Avenue.

Changing Streets is one of several projects taking place as part of Advance Goole, a major investment scheme that aims to improve the lives of people living in the town by providing them with quality housing and tackling the issues that concern them most.

Other projects will see the council and its partners using Safer, Stronger Communities funding from the government to ensure that all Goole residents have equal access to services and facilities, and can play a greater role in shaping their town for the future.

A 'Quality of Life' survey has recently been carried out to enable residents to tell the council and other organisations about the issues that matter most to them. The findings, which will be known in the coming weeks, will enable the council and other service providers to target their resources where they are needed most.

Cllr Jane Evison, the council's portfolio holder for housing, said: "It's great to see the first phase of this exciting scheme coming to fruition and improving the quality of life of people in the Goole area."
