Moorlands Community Centre in crying out for volunteers to help with Old Goole Gala - and they have this stark message: no interest, no gala.

The gala has struggled by in recent years and looks set to end if people don't come forward with ideas and help in the planning and running of the event.

Marc Salter, manager at the centre, said: "The gala is run by the community and volunteers but recently we have had difficulty getting people to attend the meetings for the planning of the event.

"Unless a few more people come forward we aren't going to have the manpower to keep the gala running.

"The funding for the gala is already in place - we just need people to come forward with assistance in planning etc."

A large part of the funding comes from Goole Town Council but the community tries to raise extra cash in the run-up to the gala.

Marc added: "The gala is a community thing - it is for everybody. The Moorlands Centre wants to help them and we help all local groups in any way we can.

"We are trying to get an idea of what people want to see in their gala but without any ideas we are struggling. We simply don't know what they want."

Karen Hammond, administrator at the Moorlands Centre, added: "It has always been a really big event in Old Goole. It is such a shame that it may have to be abandoned."

The gala will take place on the weekend of August 15, 16 and 17 if everything goes to plan.

Goole Town Councillor Pat O'Neil, who is involved with the gala every year, said: "The gala simply can't continue to survive unless more people come forward.

"The work is pleasant and very easy to do and everyone who does it enjoys it.

"Volunteers don't need to go to meetings all the time. If they show willing we will just contact them when we need them to do things."

If anybody would like to offer assistance in any form or give a donation, or if businesses would like to donate their services and see Old Goole Gala continue, call Marc at the Moorlands Community Centre on 01405 768111 or go along to the next meeting, which will take place at the centre on June 19 at 7pm.
