Police have leapt to the defence of CCTV controllers in Goole after a parish church targeted by lead thieves said it had been let down by its own security cameras.

Last week we told how Snaith Priory Church had been targeted by thieves who were stealing lead from the church.

The church has been hit by four thefts in the past 15 months - causing £30,000 of damage - and church leaders claim the two CCTV cameras which cover the area are not picking up any evidence.

But this week Pc Janet Anderson of Humberside Police defended the area's CCTV system and insisted it was effective in helping catch criminals.

She said: "We have had some lead thefts from the area in the last month and appreciate how distressing this can be.

"CCTV cameras do cover the area and they are a valuable tool in catching criminals.

"Last year an offender was identified and charged with lead thefts. The CCTV provided vital evidence in the case and shows how useful they are."

She added: "We are working hard to tackle lead thefts but we would ask people to be vigilant and report any suspicious activity to police."

Anyone with information is asked to contact Humberside Police on: 0845 60 60 222 . Alternatively, contact Crimestoppers, anonymously, on: 0800 555 111.
