A teenager who took his mum's car for a spin found himself in hot water after crashing head-on into another vehicle.

Phillip Andrew Stevens (19) drove off in his mother's Toyota Yaris and took one corner at such a speed that he smashed straight into an oncoming vehicle.

Mr Stevens, who is unemployed, was duly arrested and hauled before Goole magistrates this week.

He admitted one charge of taking a vehicle without consent and two separate charges of driving with no insurance and driving otherwise than in accordance with his licence.

The incident happened on May 25 this year when Mr Stevens took the car from his mother's drive in Snaith after she went out with her partner.

Just after setting off, Mr Stevens collided with a car on Snaith's high street after cutting a corner.

Mr Stevens, of Punton Walk in Snaith, has only a provisional driving licence and has not yet passed the full driving test.

James Gray, defending, said Mr Stevens, whose parents are divorced, did not get on with his mother and was about to move out of the house before the accident.

Since the incident on May 25 he had been living with friends and was getting help at the Hinge Centre, a charity in Goole which helps vulnerable young people.

Mr Gray said Mr Stevens suffered from cerebral palsy, which resulted in "bouts of immaturity and learning difficulties".

"His mum says that probably contributed to him taking the vehicle in the first place," added Mr Gray.

Mr Stevens was given a 12-month conditional discharge for taking a vehicle without consent.

For driving with no insurance he was fined £100 and had six penalty points added to his licence.

He was also ordered to pay £43 costs and a Government surcharge of £15.
