Developers at Sterling Capitol are currently investigating a spillage of diesel oil at their Capitol Park site which has found its way into one of the drainage ditches.

Simon Clark, director of Sterling Capitol, said: "We are keen to identify the source of this leak.

"We have had the liquid tested and it appears to be diesel. Our priority is to halt the leak as quickly as possible and commence remedial work.

"A member of our environmental team has visited the site and they have already contacted the various tenants and subcontractors on site to ask them to investigate the matter further.

"The environmental team have also been in contact with the HSE and Environment Agency."

Kester Dean, a Goole town councillor, said: "I have been made aware of this by local people and have asked the Environment Agency for a full report on what action is being taken. Clearly, it's unacceptable that local watercourses are being polluted in this way and questions have to be asked about what is going on.

"I have consistently argued for good quality development on that site.

"The scheme is supported by £26.8 million of taxpayers' money, so there's absolutely no excuse.

"I have asked Ian Cawsey to ensure that the £26.8 million is used to raise standards so that Goole does not lose out yet again."
