DEATH CRASH
A horrific crash on a notorious Goole road left a motorcyclist dead this week.
The smash happened at the junction of Seavy Road and Normandy Way in Goole at around 4.45pm on Tuesday.
A gold Yamaha motorcycle was being ridden along Normandy Way towards Rawcliffe Road when it was in collision with a Mercedes Sprinter van travelling in the opposite direction.
The 51-year-old rider of the motorcycle was killed. He has been named as Stephen Mills of Moorends. The van was driven by a Goole man.
Paramedics and a doctor went to the collision along with police but unfortunately Mr Mills suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.
The collision caused huge tailbacks on road leading ito Goole. The road was reopened several hours later at 9.30pm.
Goole Town Councillor Malcolm Boatman, who lives on Seavy Road, said: "Something has got to be done about the speed at the junction. I've seen four serious accidents on that junction in the last year - not necessarily injuries in all of them but certainly car damage.
"I think it is a result of a combination of things: the 30 mile per hour zone meeting the 60 mile per hour zone, cars emerging from the junction when cars are not travelling at the correct speed along Andersen Road, and vehicles stopping to turn into Seavy Road whilst cars are still coming up at 60 miles per hour behind them."
Cllr Boatman pointed out that he hoped the proposed new link road from the Sterling Capitol site would help towards alleviating the problems.
He said: 'The link road would emerge at that junction and hopefully it will sort it out, because the whole junction will have to be redesigned. The problem is, how long do we have to wait? Even if it it took two years to build, which it could, there could be another eight accidents on that road before then.
"I live on Seavy Road and I have had some near misses and I know the dangers."
A spokesperson for Humberside Police said: "Roads deaths are a national problem and we are aiming to reduce the numbers of people being either killed or seriously injured in Humberside.
"We are seeing reductions, however officers continue to take part in operations and will be on patrol on the roads in an attempt to reduce the numbers further."
Police are appealing for witnesses to the incident or anyone who saw either vehicle prior to it. Anyone with any information is asked to contact Humberside Police on 0845 6060 222 quoting log number 413 of June 3.
